San Gimignano
The towered city, is considered a jewel of medieval architecture and town planning in Italy. Precisely for these characteristics it was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1990. The ancient township, erected on a natural highland, appears today enclosed by high defensive walls, and distinguished by the numerous towers which make the medieval town's silhouette completely unique. In fact, San Gimignano is to be credited with having maintained these characterically medieval elements – the high defensive towers erected by aristocratic families – untouched over the centuries. This is a great fortune for the city: many Italian cities' walls have long since been destroyed or covered up by more recent constructions.
